KUWAIT: British engineering company Amec and US-based Foster Wheeler have reportedly won the consultancy contracts for Kuwait's new $14.2 billion Al Zour refinery and its $16.3 billion clean fuel project. The Al Zour project is intended to process 615,000 barrels of oil per day (b/d) when it comes online in 2018, exceeding the capacity of Saudi Arabia's 550,000 b/d Ras Tanura plant, which is currently believed to be the largest refinery in the Middle East. The clean fuel project is aimed at upgrading and boosting capacity at two out of three of Kuwait National Petroleum Company's (KNPC) existing facilities. The value of the contracts amounts to around two per cent of each of their total budgets, reports said.Sources earlier said that five international engineering companies had submitted bids for the project management and consultancy contracts. Apart from Foster Wheeler and Amec, Fluor Corporation, Australia's WorleyParsons and France's Technip were in the race.State-owned KNPC, which is running the two projects, is working on a list of contractors and will award further tenders in the first few months of 2013, Kuwait's Al Rai newspaper reported.
