Looking for a great meal on the road? Critics from arond the country rate the best restaurants
There's nothing like a good meal to help a salesperson toast a relationship with a customer or just wind down after a long day on the road. Stockyards Cafe
AMARILLO, TEXAS
If you find yourself in the heart of Texas beef country, Cindy Lee, food columnist for the Amarillo Daily News, says you shouldn't miss this Lone Star State favorite. The big draw at the Stockyards Cafe is the 8 oz. chicken-fried steak, which is pan fried in 1/2 inch of lard after being dipped in an egg batter and flour. Few who enter can resist the allure of chickenfried steak drenched in a cream gravy with a side of fries. Grilled steaks are another major attraction. T-bones, rib-eyes, and New York strips are all custom-cut in-house. While you are waiting, take a look at the Wild West photos and vintage branding irons and bridles that hearken back to the rancher world of a bygone era. During weekdays, the restaurant is packed with downtown office workers, and cattle buyers and sellers. That's not surprising, since the restaurant is located inside the Amarillo Livestock Auction, where more than 300,000 heads of stock and feeder cattle are sold yearly. BOSTON
Allison Arnett, restaurant critic for the Boston Globe, says Les Zygomates, which is designed as a French wine bar, is one of the most interesting new restaurants in Boston. The more adventurous will want to sample the cod cheeks au curry. The clientele ranges from businesspeople of the financial district and South Station to a younger crowd....
