The August earthquake created a tsunami of book donations to Friends of the Napa Library. For weeks after the earthquake, an estimated 1,000 books a day were dropped off at the downtown library-nearly three times the usual volume, said Bruce Taylor, Friends' volunteer sales manager.
"After the earthquake, everyone decided, I suspect, is that 'I've picked up these books for the last time and I'm not going to pick them up again,"' Taylor said. "It was just overwhelming."
That first weekend after the earthquake, volunteer Beverly Efishoff said she and other volunteers filled six vehicles, including two SUVs, when they emptied donation bins while the library was closed. Friends of the Library ended up having to rent an extra storage unit.
