The Federal Trade Commission this week launched the IoT Home Inspector Challenge to award cash prizes for the development of tools to address security vulnerabilities in in-home Internet of things (IoT) devices, including the issue of out-of-date software. Submissions will be accepted from March 1 to May 22. Winners will be announced on or about July 27, with a cash award up to $25,000 available for the best solution, and up to $3,000 available for as many as three runners-up. Entries will be reviewed by a five-judge panel: Shevirah, Inc., founder and Chief Technology Officer Georgia Weidman, Indiana University infomatics and computing professor L. Jean Camp, University of Washington computer science and engineering professor Tadayoshi Kohno, Carnegie Mellon University vulnerability researcher Dan Klinedinst, and David Wollman, deputy director of the Smart Grid and Cyber-Physical Systems Program Office at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The FTC has previously used the challenge prize approach to encourage development of tools to block robocalls.
