Signaling System 7 is fast becoming the darling of the data networking industry.
Last week, Ascend Communications Inc. announced the Ascend Signaling Gateway (ASG), a new product that lets Ascend's WAN access switches communicate with telecommunications carriers' SS7 networks.
Such gateways give service providers a way to tap the intelligent call handling and routing features of the public switched telephone network to more efficiently handle data traffic.
Specifically, the ASG works with Ascend's MAX TNT and acts as a switch to route Internet calls off the public switched telephone network and directly to the Internet.
