The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) will offer for the first time a certification program for geometric dimensioning and tolerancing professionals (GDTP). Exams for two levels of certification are scheduled for Nov 8, 1997, in Boston, MA; Dearborn, MI; Kansas City, MO; Los Angeles, CA; and Raleigh, NC. The new exam standard, developed by the ASME Y14.5.2 subcommittee, sets up two levels of certification: Technologist GDTP and Senior GDTP The exam for the first level, Technologist GDTP, is intended to objectively test the ability of the individual to understand drawings that have been prepared using the language of GD&T as defined in the Y14.5M-1994 standard. The second level certification, Senior GDTP, provides the additional objective measure of an individual's ability to select proper geometric controls as well as to properly apply them to drawings. The four-hour Technologist GDTP level exam consists of not less than 100 questions, is closed book, and includes both multiple choice and written answers. The Senior GDTP level exam has the same parameters and takes six hours. An overall score of 85% with no score lower than 50% in any of the sections of either test is required to pass. Certificates expire three years from date of issuance. Registration fee is $245. Future exam dates will be announced. For more information about the exam schedule contact John Millman at ASME at 212-705-8584; or the ASME Certification Dept at 212-705-8465.
