Abstract

The Gemini Axiomatic RS-232/PC Card Converter is reviewed. The device turns a standard communications port into a PCMCIA port. The Axiomatic PCMCIA Interface transparently converts PCMCIA parallel bus signals from PCMCIA I/O cards into standard RS-232 serial signals. It allows non-PCMCIA devices to run PCMCIA modems via the serial port. Overall, the Axiomatic performed well when compared to the straight PCMCIA card usage. Throughput tests showed that the Axiomatic did not bottleneck data transferals, and performance was on par. The Axiomatic currently is in beta form, and engineers are working on problems. One problem is that the Axiomatic does not allow for flash upgrades to the AT&T KIT card. With the Axiomatic, owners of older laptops who cannot install PCMCIA cards into their computer will be able to use their laptops to the fullest extent.
