Here's a five-step process that can help prepare your board for strategic planning success.
1. Define the context within which your board addresses strategy-Nothing matters more than defining the context for discussions about strategy, and the first step is to separate strategy from planning.
This is not a semantic distinction. Strategy is about defining the strategic destination for the business. It is about making choices about the business you are in, the value you add, the customers you serve, and the capabilities you need.
Planning is about how you intend to implement the strategic choices you make. It is about making the commitment to act, allocating the resources to produce outcomes, and measuring the impacts of your efforts.
