Getty Images announced February 9 that it paid $50 million to acquire iStockPhoto.com, a Canadian stock agency that has grown rapidly by licensing low-cost royalty-free pictures-sometimes for as little s $1.
The deal unites the marketing muscle of Getty, the world's largest stock imagery company, with iStock's loyal community of designers and photographers. iStock has boasted in the past that its Web site draws more traffic than Getty's.
Unlike other recent Getty acquisitions that were folded into the Getty brand, Getty says it plans to operate iStock separately from its other stock business. Getty spokesperson DebTrevino and iStock vp of marketing Kelly Thompson both say there are no plans to market...
