The dangers and treatment measures involved with GPC.
GIANT PAPILLARY conjunctivitis (GPC), sometimes referred to as contact tens papillary conjunctivitis (CLPC), is characterized by the eruption of enlarged papillae on the upper tarsus. Contact lenses (most commonly), ocular prostheses, sutures and scierai buckles or adhesives are the causes. GPC was once helieved to he an allergy to contact lens polymers or deposits, hut it is actually caused by repeated irritation from the lens edge. It is estimated that the average person blinks over 10,000 times per day. The mechanical irritation and chronic inflammation caused hy the under surface of the eyelids rubbing against ocular devices induces an inflammatory response.1
Contrary to what some practitioners believe, GPC is not allergy. While GPC and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) both share signs of enlarged papillae and increased mucous discharge, the papillae of VKC patients (greater than Imm) are generally larger than what is observed with GPC (greater than 0.3mm).2 In addition, GPC patients do not exhibit the comeal...
