Silicon Valley- Facing a flurry of new competitors- including possibly one of its investors- GlobeSpan Inc., the world's No. 1 DSL- chip maker, is racing to widen its lead and strengthen its portfolio with the addition of two new products.
GlobeSpan recently announced a four-port ADSL chipset for central- office applications, while separately offering a software upgrade to support the emerging ADSL standard in Japan.
The products are designed to maintain the company's position in the ADSL-chip market. Last year, GlobeSpan was the world's leading supplier of ADSL chipsets, with a 31% market share, according to International Data Corp. (IDC), Framingham, Mass.
This year, while many DSL-chip makers have yet to begin volume shipments of their initial products, GlobeSpan continues to experience strong growth in terms of unit shipments and sales in this emerging product segment.
On Oct. 25, GlobeSpan reported results that significantly exceeded analysts' consensus estimates and said it expects revenue to continue climbing in the next quarters.
