A Modesto Gold's Gym franchisee is proposing to build a 42,000-square-foot gym in North Natomas, and he expects to follow that with gyms near Elk Grove and downtown Sacramento.
Perry Thomas, also a longtime commercial real estate broker, and his partners are seeking approval from the city of Sacramento for a nearly $6 million Natomas gym plus three retail buildings at the southwest comer of Del Paso Road and Gateway Park Boulevard.
The gym and the 21,500 square feet of retail would be built on 5.8 acres. Thomas
hopes to begin construction in June, with an opening in November.
This would be Greater Sacramento's third Gold's Gym and its largest by far.
Thomas and his partners also "have a site in mind" in the Elk Grove area for a Gold's gym of 35,000 square feet, and are eyeing the railyard area of downtown Sacramento for a gym of 12,000 to 15,000 square feet. "Between now and 2006 we should have all three facilities completed," Thomas said.

Thomas and partners opened a 26,500-square-foot, two-story Gold's in Modesto in February 2002. It's gaining 180 to 200 new members each month, he said, and now has 4,600 members.
