After four summer competitions produced torrents of red ink, the Goodwill Games will take its first winter run in Lake Placid, N.Y., this week.
The Winter Goodwill Games, featuring 11 sports from Feb. 17-20, will be used as brand building firmament for both Turner Sports and carrier TNT, which will supply 16 exclusive hours of coverage. The inaugural events from the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics will be figure skating, alpine, cross country and freestyle skiing, bobsledding, ski jumping, and short track skating competitions. This may lay the groundwork for future profits as other former Olympic venues have expressed interest in hosting upcoming Games.
"There are only 40 multisport competitions around the globe and they are not held every year, so we are looking to establish the Winter Goodwill Games as a major event on the international sports landscape," said Goodwill Games president Mike Plant....
