If anyone knows that one man's trash is another man's treasure, it's certainly the Grangers. Not only has the family founded a successful waste collection business, but they are also finding creative ways to take what's old new again.
"Granger is a locally founded company in the waste industry that believes in recycling," said Keith Granger, vice president of the Granger Container Service, Inc. The company entered the recycling arena the same way it has always branched out--by reviewing the community's needs and the company's capabilities.
"It is our philosophy that if we see a need, we evaluate that need and determine whether or not we can manage it effectively," Granger explained. "It might be of some interest to understand why we got into all of these different businesses. We started in the construction business. It was my grandfather, Keith, and his three sons. Elton Granger heads up Granger Construction, which is a separate entity at this time. My father, Ron, is the chairman, and my uncle, Jerry, is the CEO of the solid waste entities.
"When we were in the construction business, back in the early 1960s, my dad and his brother decided they couldn't find anyone to pick up construction debris in a timely fashion, so they bought a truck and some containers and started to handle it," Granger continued. "Then it started to catch on with other construction companies. [My father and uncle] saw a need and thought they could manage it."
From there, Granger kept growing. "We're in the waste hauling business," Granger noted. "We are in the disposal business. We own and operate two sanitary landfills and a recycling business. With the recycling, we saw a need where there wasn't anyone handling a mix of industrial commercial...
