There were 45 stamp-issuing Indian states between 1864 and 1951. That included 36 feudatory states, six convention states and three unions of feudatory states.
The feudatory states are listed in Table 1. Their stamps had franking power solely in the states for which they were issued, except for Cochin and Travancore, which had a reciprocal postal agreement.
The first stamp-issuing state was Soruth in 1864 in the west. Soruth was followed in the 1860s by four other states in north or central India.
