After 10 years in practice, OB/GYN Susan Murrmann has delivered plenty of babies, and still does. But as her patient population has gradually aged, she's noticed another trend.
"Women will have hot flashes and mood swings, but they don't come in until a family member gets tired of it and says they need to get their hormones checked," Murrmann says.
So Murrmann started doing her homework on menopause.
"I kept getting more and more patients who wanted a female doctor to go through this with them," she says. "New patients keep coming to me saying they need someone to listen to their symptoms." Three other Memphis physicians promote a practice focused on menopause, but Murrmann is the first in town to earn the status of Certified Menopause Clinician, awarded by the North American Menopause Society. Her enthusiasm is beginning to rub off on the three other docs in her practice, who all plan to seek certification. Next in line is co-founder Mary McDonald.
Today, up to 40% of Murrmann's practice involves postmenopausal women, and it's a growing area for McDonald. The two younger physicians in the group, Christine Mestmacher and Christian Geier, are still developing their practices and so are still seeing more obstetrics patients.
