GIBSONTON, Fla. - Ellwood "Sonny" Hall, president of U.S.A. Demolition Derby Inc. & Figure Eight, Belleville, Mich., has been operating for 25 years at fairs in Michigan, doing 50 events in 1999.
But he says "computers will kill us. I hope to get three or four more years out of what we're doing. It's getting harder for the guys to find four-wheel drive carburated cars. In the last 15 years, with all the fuel injections, sensory intakes and exhaust manifolds, the cars are getting too hot and shut down."
Hall was here with his wife, Rosie, at the Feb. 8-13 trade show and extravaganza of the International Independent Showmen's Foundation. He was being shown around by Albert Carollo, owner of an iron mine attraction in Iron Mountain, Mich.
Carollo is on the board of the Dickinson County Fair, Norway, Mich. where Hall's show has performed for many years. The season began last year on Father's Day in June and ended Sept. 17. "We did the 50 shows in 93 days.
