Q We are planning to put a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liner under a tank bottom to mitigate corrosion. We have not done this application before. The HDPE liner will be used as the fourth layer from the top (~350 mm below) with concrete as one of the layers. There will also be a drainage pipe that will drain water. All this is done to prevent water from reaching the surface. My questions are: Can we still expect corrosion, and is cathodic protection (CP) necessary?
A We installed an HDPE liner under a 33-ft (10-m)-diameter tank bottom as secondary containment. Over the liner, we used clean river sand and installed CP anodes between the liner and tank bottom.
