CALGARY--Two specialists' plans to buy a hospital closed down by Premier Ralph Klein's spending cuts have run into a legal glitch.
Calgary ophthalmologist Dr. Peter Huang, and his brother, otolaryngologist Dr. Ian Huang, want to buy Holy Cross Hospital from the Calgary Regional Health Authority (CRHA) for $4.5 million, through their company Enterprise Universal Inc.
But the deal is being held up by a $7.2-million dispute between the CRHA and Calgary city commissioners.
That's the amount city lawyers say Calgary spent on providing parking lots and other amenities to sites run by the former Calgary District Hospital Group (CDHG). They say the provincial Hospitals Act allows them to claim that money when the facilities are sold.
