Dealer will completely exit Chicago and Cleveland markets
LARGO, MD. - In a move that leaves more than 1,700 people jobless, Hechinger announced its biggest wave of store closings since it merged with Builders Square in September 1997. Officials from the retailer's corporate headquarters told store employees Feb. 10 that the company will close 31 Builders Square stores and three Hechinger units over the next several weeks. The 34 closings will drop Hechinger's store count to 206.
The company is fleeing Chicago and Cleveland entirely, closing all 16 of its remaining stores in Chicagoland and its nine units in the Cleveland area. The two Builders Square units in Portland, Ore., and the one in Las Vegas will...
