That's where Candace Rey found herself two decades ago. Today, she's senior vice president of First Union Securities on Alamance Road in Burlington.
She has a comfortable income now, but when she and her first husband parted, she was making $17,000 a year. Suddenly, she was solely responsible for her two children, as well as payments on a new house.
A branch manager at the former Bank of North Carolina (now Bank of America), she knew she had to move up. She eventually became a bank vice president and taught principles of banking and finance at Alamance Community College in the evenings.
