WHAT'S HOT: Priced at $499, the dual-interface (USB and SCSI) HP Scanjet 7400c is the most affordable scanner in HP's Scanjet 7400c series. This base unit provides many of the same benefits as the pricier $700 Scanjet 7450c and $1000 7490c models, but it costs less because it doesn't come with an automatic document feeder (a $200 add-on option) or more powerful image-editing software.
The Scanjet 7400c's 2400-dpi optical resolution can enlarge a 35mm transparency to an 11-by-17-inch image without a significant loss of color fidelity or line detail. That's substantially larger than the typical 8-by-10-inch enlargements that most 1200-dpi scanners can produce adequately.
In our tests the 7400c demonstrated the same fine image quality as the 7450c, especially at a low 75-dpi resolution. At maximum resolution, the 7400c's scans showed a modest shift in some color...
