An HDC evaluation of high-wire cropping for cucumber production (project PC 273) has shown profit per hectare could be boosted by as much as £66,000 per annum (at a single-unit cost of 22p per cucumber) if implemented instead of the traditional cordon-trained British cropping system.
A cucumber-grower walk held earlier this month by project host David Schellingerhout at Glen Avon Growers, Hull, showed the system in production and attracted representation from 18 UK cucumber growers.
