SO, YOU want to be a romance writer? The first thing to do is send off for Harlequin's guidelines. A note from editorial director Karin Stoecker reminds aspiring Penny Jordans that "there is no 'formula' to writing a publishable romance novel." But there are plenty of signposts along the way.
The series determines details like the age and outlook of the heroine (Harlequin American Romance leading ladies are "full of spunk" and "never wimp out to the dynamic hero"); the desired levels of "sensuality" ("warm, tender emotion" is preferable in Harlequin Romance, while "highly erotic, realistic and fun" love scenes pass muster in the Temptation line); and...
