Hussmann International, a Bridgeton-based refrigeration company, laid off 81 hourly workers in St. Louis Jan. 4, bringing to at least 371 the number of layoffs since November, said Don Gant, chief union steward at Hussmann.
Gant said the numbers do not include other company workers who are not members of the United Steel Workers Local 9014. Sources close to the company estimate companywide layoffs at about 400.
"There are no orders coming in," said Don Gant, the chief union steward for the United Steel Workers Local 9014. "it is a shame to have these layoffs. Our people aren't used to this because we have had a booming economy for 10 years and now the bottom has fallen out."
