Trusted Information Systems, Glenwood, Md., and IBM last week inked a patent and software licensing deal that the two companies said will ensure a more secure environment for electronic commerce. IBM will acquire the right to license and distribute TIS's patented RecoverKey technology within the IBM SecureWay Key Management Framework, as well as in IBM products that will need key recovery technology. The computer vendor also can create a software tool kit using RecoverKey, which can be licensed by other vendors for their own cryptographic applications. IBM also is licensing TIS's Key Recovery Center software, which provides recovery operations in the event an encryption key is lost or damaged. According to IBM officials, RecoverKey is the first key recovery technology to work within IBM's SecureWay Key Management Framework. IBM said its approach is to ensure that SecureWay can coexist and interoperate with a variety of key management systems and key recovery technologies. TIS can be reached at www.tis.com and IBM at www.ibm.com/security.
