In recent years, the challenges faced by OEMs surrounded their ability to provide quick-to-market cost-effective products, meet desired price points, and maintain the highest quality assurances. The trend toward strategic outsourcing of design and manufacture to electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers such as Celestica allowed OEMs to face these challenges, furthering their competitive standing in the marketplace.
But 2001 was a very different year for the original manufacturers of computing, communications and optical equipment. Demand fluctuations in the electronics sector presented these companies with unexpected challenges, resulting in an increased need to implement increasingly cost-effective business strategies.
