GRANDVILLE - Contrary to some people's persistent beliefs, this Don Strock hasn't thrown any touchdown passes for the Miami Dolphins.
"It happens all the time," said Strock of the Don confusion.
"When I call clients that I've never met, and if they are a contemporary or a peer, they'll say, 'Oh, did you play quarterback for the Miami Dolphins?' Well, I tell them I used, to when I was taller and handsomer."
But this Don Strock, a Michigan State University graduate, is related to that Don Strock.
"He is a shirttail relative. My first cousin, Terry Strock, was a football coach at Virginia Tech. He played football for Virginia Tech and he recruited Don Strock and was his coach at Virginia Tech," he said.
"Terry is a genealogist and said we are related, but not first cousins or anything like that."
Although Strock hasn't thrown any passes in the National Football League, he has passed through many buildings in the state checking each for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for accessible design.
As far as he knows, the company he founded and owns - DHS Associates Inc. - is the only one that performs this service in Michigan. But Strock wouldn't own this market niche and be doing the work that he loves so much if he hadn't been fired from a job selling professional liability and workman's compensation insurance.
"They asked me to resurrect a product line. I worked a year-and-a-half on it. But in retrospect, there never was a toplevel commitment to the product line....
