HOLLAND - He's done what he calls the "big bank thing," going through the training programs and moving from position to position as he worked his way up.
The career path led to an executive position at a familyowned bank in his hometown of Fort Wayne, Ind. Then came the call from a former co-worker in Michigan who told him about a small, growing community bank. Mercantile Bank of West Michigan, which was planning to expand its footprint into a new market.
Jon Steiner inquired and found an opportunity to his liking that brought him back to West Michigan, where he had started his career several years earlier with the former Old Kent Bank.
Steiner was named last year as Holland city president for Mercantile Bank, where he is leading the bank's move into the Holland-Zeeland market.
The position. provides "the best of both worlds" for Steiner: a leadership position that allows him to build the business in the Holland-Zeeland area for a growing, publicly traded bank that has a strong reputation for customer service, yet is small enough that "you can keep your arms around it."
