Niuniu Ji is one of those people who has accomplished in a few years what it takes some a lifetime to achieve. Aside from creating a well-regarded philanthropic web site from his dorm room at Case Western Reserve University, Mr. Ji, 21, will become a Rhodes Scholar later this year.
The CWRU senior created FreeDonation.com as a "hobby" in 1999. Site visitors now make about 10 million very small monetary donations per month, and Yahoo! Internet Life magazine named the site one of the best of 2001. Mr. Ji serves as the company's president and chief technology officer. Jennie S. Hwang serves as chief executive officer.
FreeDonation.com charges advertisers a predetermined amount for banner ads on the site, which uses 25% of those fees for administrative costs. The remaining 75% is used for donations, which range from a fraction of a cent to a few cents.
Visitors use a click of the mouse to direct donations to their favorite cause: AIDS, the arts, cancer, children, education, the environment or hunger. So far, Mr. Ji's site has raised more than $50,000.
Mr. A graduates this spring from the CWRU engineering school with a degree in systems engineering. He will begin the Rhodes Scholarship at England's Oxford University in October and hopes to earn a degree in optical networking and telecommunications....
