USAA, which last week launched a platform that enables customers to deposit checks into their bank accounts using their Apple iPhones (CardLine, 8/14), says clients deposited $1.5 million during the first three days the service became available. USAA, which is based in San Antonio, announced the launch of Deposit@Mobile Aug. 11, but customers began using it Aug. 10. USAA provided figures for deposits through from Aug. 11 to Aug. 13. The iPhone user first must download USAA's Mobile App from the Apple's online store. Some 70,000 customers either have downloaded or updated the Apple App, USAA said in a news release. The owner then launches the iPhone's mobile-banking application, which he uses to take photos of the front and back of the check. The owner then sends the images to USAA so the funds can be deposited. USAA developed the technology in-house, including software that clears up any distortions so the check image is Check 21 quality. USAA has 7.2 million members, and many are stationed in different parts of the world. "Nearly 50% of our 1 million mobile users are active-duty military, who may be deployed anywhere," Wayne Peacock, USAA executive vice president of enterprise business operations, said in a statement. "The convenience of mobile access is essential to delivering the highest possible level of customer service."
