LOVELAND-Sugar will be a little sweeter thanks to David Sanders and his company, CO2 Solutions.
Sanders' Juice Stabilizing Technology is like a "pre-wash" for sugar beets. The process helps filter the sugary juice and stabilize the sugars in the beets so more sugar is produced in the end product.
'With sugar beet factories, you have to soak the sugar out of the beet and then you have a solution that resembles muddy water because there is still a lot of mud and dirt mixed in," Sanders said. "You have to clean this solution out so that when you evaporate it the sugars can be separated."
His system was installed last year in sugar beet facilities in Minnesota and North Dakota.
Sanders used his experience in water and wastewater treatment to develop the system. He noticed that sugar beet factories look almost like two separate water plants, and that inefficiency helped inspire his process.
