Public safety users have a wide variety of ruggedized computers to choose from these days, in all shapes and colors. Palmtops, pen tablets and modular machines that separate the display and computing components from the keyboard are popular, but some are more comfortable with the conventional laptop design. The Itronix GoBook Max is the latest to come from this Spokane, WA, based company, and offers considerably greater durability than is built into most other computers designed for harsh environments.
The GoBook Max has an outwardly conventional design, with the keyboard attached to the display by a hinge. Closer inspection shows that there is no latch that has to be depressed in order to raise the display from the keyboard, because the unit doesn't need one. If the notebook unfolds inadvertently, it doesn't matter. All components are sealed against dust and moisture, and the hinge has been fatigue tested to work 30,000 times or more before weakening.
