In his former job, people asked John Pohlad for money. Now he's asking clients with $10 million or more to trust him and Bel Air Investment Advisors with their wealth.
In 2002, Pohlad and his partner, John Fabie, opened a Minneapolis office of Los Angeles-based Bel Air Investment Advisors. Now the office, which is the firm's sole branch, is responsible for investing $300 million in client assets.
Becoming a wealth management adviser was a change for Pohlad. Previously he worked at Minneapolis- based Sahara Investments Co., where he and his brother, Tom, managed the family's wealth. Pohlad is the youngest of five children.
John's late father was Harold Pohlad, brother to Minnesota Twins owner Carl. Harold was a successful north suburban banker who owned the First State Bank of New Brighton and other community banks.
At Sahara, John Pohlad said he saw almost every business plan in the Twin Cities from entrepreneurs who were seeking financing.
