The Marimba, a kind of xylophone, is known mostly by a select group of musicians. But Marimba Inc. may soon get much wider play. It's the new company of Kim Polese, who already has one household name to her credit: Java.
Polese helped turn Java into the computing world's hottest new development. As part of Sun Microsystems' original Java development team, she helped create what has become the first cross-platform application development language designed specifically for the Internet. In addition, Polese alone served as the entire Java marketing department. She developed and implemented the Java marketing program-including positioning, branding, pricing, and product name-and served as Sun's chief Java evangelist.
Polese left Sun last year and launched Marimba last month. She's now preparing Marimba's first products, set to ship in the fall. Exact details of those products are closely guarded. Polese says she wants to avoid getting caught in a vicious vaporware cycle....
