Kohl's Corp. plans to build a 525,000-square-foot distribution center in the Midwest that will employ as many as 950 people to fuel the ecommerce venture the retailer will launch by next spring.
The Menomonee Falls-based department store chain is narrowing potential sites for the center and will decide where to build "in the very near future," said Gary Vasques, executive vice president of marketing.
The new building likely would be the only distribution center serving the company's online sales, Vasques said.
Kohl's is seriously considering a site just north of Cincinnati, in the small city of Monroe, Ohio. The company is talking with Monroe development officials about building the massive plant in the city's new commerce center, Monroe development director Jay Stewart said.
Kohl's officials confirmed the company is considering a Monroe location for a new e-commerce distribution center, but wouldn't comment on any other aspect of the plans.
"It is one of the sites that we're exploring," Kohl's spokeswoman Julie Gardner said.
Kohl's told Monroe officials it likely would double the building's size to more than 1 million square feet - within in the next five years or as e-commerce demand dictates, Stewart said.
"It would be the biggest Monroe project ever," he said. "The whole community is very sup portive of the plan."
