In anticipation of the closure of the Ketchikan Pulp Co. mill this spring, targeted efforts are being made to shore up the local economy. Nearly 500 people will be out of work when mill operations cease on March 24.
One such effort, being spearheaded by KPC and parent company Louisiana-Pacific Corp., seeks to establish a "Ketchikan Borough Industrial Complex" at the existing pulp mill site and facilities.
According to the KBIC planning team, site assets could be conveyed to a public-owned entity, providing lease-back opportunities for entrepreneurs interested in pursuing business, industrial and employment opportunities....
