The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced today it is bringing on-site adoption hours back to the LA/ SPCA shelter for the first time since it reopened a temporary facility in Algiers.From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, the LA/SPCA will hold an adoption preview for the public with employees whelping with pet adoptions. Regular shelter adoption hours go into effect Friday. Regular adoption hours will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.On-site adoption marks another milestone in our rebuilding, said Laura Maloney, executive director. One of our goals is to promote the human-animal bond and making lifetime matches for the animals we shelter is an important part of the work we do.Since losing its facility on Japonica Street, the LA/SPCA has operated at temporary facility at 701 Thayer St. in Algiers. Limited adoption hours remain in effect there until the LA/SPCA can reopen seven days a week.The LA/SPCA resumed off-site adoption in January, which will continue to augment regular shelter adoption hours. The LA/SPCA will hold an off-site adoption from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Jefferson Feed, 4421 Jefferson Hwy. The Louisiana SPCA worked in cooperation with several other agencies to rescue more than 8,500 animals after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans Aug. 29. The LA/ SPCA is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of animal suffering. Chartered in 1888, it is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in Louisiana providing care and basic medical services for approximately 11,000 homeless and unwanted animals each year. The LA/SPCA is a membership organization that depends upon the support of the public.
