Merger rumors are enveloping San Francisco-based McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen LLP, which saw a possible marriage with a Baltimore firm crumble last summer.
And McCutchen is not the only Bay Area firm linked to a potential pairing.
McCutchen officials refused to comment on reports that the ninth-largest Bay Area law firm, with about 300 attorneys, is in talks with an East Coast firm. But a London legal newspaper said McCutchen and Boston's Bingham Dana LLP are discussing a merger that would form the nation's 18th-largest firm.
"We are talking to McCutchen. They are an excellent firm," said Hank Shafran, spokesman for Bingham Dana. "We are a long way away from having anything to report."
McCutchen Chairman Donn Pickett was out of the country and unavailable to comment.
"We've made no secret that we're interested in pursuing a merger," said McCutchen Managing Partner Michael Plishner. "There's no issue here."
