No claims against midwives have approached substantial limit
Re: "Liability questions still linger" (the Medical Post, Oct. 2)
I am responding to the above article in connection with collaborative health teams in Ontario, and in particular the comments attributed to Dr. Janice Willett, president of the Ontario Medical Association, regarding insurance and midwives. Our organization, HIROC (Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada), is the insurer of all midwives in Ontario, through the Association of Ontario Midwives.
Dr. Willett expressed concern about the inadequacy of limits of liability insurance carried by midwives participating in collaborative care.
The midwife limits of insurance are substantial and we know of no claims or settlements approaching the limits Ontario midwives have in effect. Furthermore, HIROC and the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) issued a joint statement in June on liability protection for midwives and physicians aimed at reducing misconceptions regarding...
