As chief financial officer of Lexington Clinic, Randy LeMay knew something could and had to be done. The costs of supplies and services were growing almost as fast as the health care system in Lexington, Ky.
The goal was simple: keep the cost of supplies below 5 percent of net revenue. With Lexington Clinic having centralized purchasing for all locations, LeMay put Purchasing Manager Cari Scordo in charge of the project.
"This challenge affected all clinical and administrative areas," Scordo said. "Our system has 24 locations, 200 providers in 30 specialty areas and approximately 1,000 employees. Plus we recently constructed an ambulatory surgery center and added a six-bed sleep center."
