With a wide array of leading-edge products, including some of the most compact digital cell phones, LG Information & Communications is jumping into the global limelight.
Since the world's first commercialization of the digital code-division-multiple-access technology in 1996, Korea has set a firm footing in the global CDMA industry with more than 14 million mobile phone subscribers. Leading the flourishing domestic CDMA market, LG Information & Communications, Ltd. has enjoyed impressive growth for years.
Last year, LGIC's mobile phone sales escalated 200% from 1997 to 650 billion won (about US$541.67 million) amid the explosive growth of 8 million new domestic subscribers. Also, sales of its best-selling wireless phone product, CION, reached 1 trillion won (about US$ 833.33 million) by last October. Meanwhile, LGIC's dramatic leapfrog into the mobile phone industry continued with brisk export activities. The firm already has shipped about US$60 million worth of CDMA-based phones to several foreign carriers -- including GTE of the United States, Hong Kong's Hutchison and Peru's Telefonicas.
