While the Army is seeking information on alternative engines for the UH-1H helicopter, service officials close to the program believe the Light Helicopter Turbine Engine Company's (LHTEC) T800-801 engine will ultimately be selected because of its collateral benefit to the Army's RAH-66 Comanche scout helicopter program.
"While we're bound by law to solicit information about other engines, we're confident that no one will be able to demonstrate to us that their engine is better suited than the T800-801," Lt. Col. Robert Birmingham, the Army's project manager for the T800 engine, said earlier this month.
The Army and the National Guard agreed late last year to examine replacing the Bell Helicopter Textron UH-1H's AlliedSignal T53-L-13 engine with a more reliable and cost efficient engine. "The...
