After hinting at the possibility for months, Microsoft (Redmond, WA - 425-882-8080, www.microsoft.com) made official its plans to provide real-time communications capabilities based on the session initiation protocol (SIP) in its next-gen OS. Windows XP (previously code-named "Whistler") ships with a standards-based SIP client as early as next fall, and will soon after add SIP proxy and registrar servers. A design preview will be available in June.
