Local 183 of the Universal Workers Union and the Labourers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) are in another war of words.
This time, each side is presenting a different take on attendance and the outcome of a weekend membership meeting held by Local 183 in Toronto.
According to Local 183, more than 500 members attended the Sunday morning meeting and overwhelmingly endorsed the plans of the current leadership to block the union being put into trusteeship under LIUNA.
A resolution supporting the modern operations of the Toronto local and rejecting LIUNA's bid was endorsed by the majority of members present.
The resolution said: "The executive and membership of Local 183 will defend our local against the attempted takeover bid by the U. S.-based international, fight for the right of membership democracy, and condemn LIUNA for its politically motivated attacks against our local and our members."
After the meeting, Tony Dionisio, business manager for Local 183, said the turnout and vote shows members reject LIUNA's trusteeship bid.
"I am so proud of this membership. Together we will defend what we have built in Toronto. We will not stand by and watch outsiders steal it away.
"We've won this battle before and we will win it again," Dionisio said.
