Michael Sabet really loves his wife.
What other explanation could there be for a meat-loving man to open a completely vegan bakery that caters exclusively to his wife's herbivore lifestyle?
OK, it could be that he really hated his old job - car salesman - but it's Valentine's Day, so let's just assume he truly enjoys making and selling tasty confections without traditional ingredients like eggs, milk and butter, and loves his wife, and that's why he opened his one-man vegan bakery, Sweet to Lick, in Williston Park in August.
Either way, it was a long journey to that point.
"My wife has been vegan since the 1990s, and we've been together since 2000," Sabet said. "The choices for vegan cuisine have improved, but the fault has always been with dessert.
"I decided to try my hand at some vegan desserts for her," he added. "Three years ago, we started selling vegan cookies at the local farmers market."
Six months into his new retail operation, Sabet is still the only employee at Sweet to Lick - which is open every day, forcing him to average around 100 hours at the shop each week.
