Albert Macanian wishes he could be in the furniture moving business. Instead, slow sales are forcing his store, Albert's Furniture Gallery - a fixture on Route 110 in Farmingdale for 30 years - to close its doors in December.
The business is currently holding its final liquidation sale to get rid of $4 million in inventory.
Albert's isn't the only home furnishings store along this section of Route 110 known as furniture alley that has struggled through difficult economic times recently. With home sales lagging, a few retailers that sell bedroom sets are being replaced by other businesses.
Furniture retailers have come and gone in Farmingdale and usually just the names on the stores change. But lately, the exodus of some furniture businesses is seen as opportunity for other types of tenants.
