I thought the $565 million purchase of Wild Oats by Whole Foods was a pretty big 2007 business story. Or maybe the recent $2.9 billion buyout of Pharmion.
Big money deals with local impact. All seemed pretty heady stuff until I heard that Tom's Tavern was closing.
Now that, my fellow cheeseburger lovers, is important news. And not something I wanted to read.
Tom's is one of those places ingrained in Boulder beer and food lore. Remember when it had a Shuffleboard table right in the center aisle? Tom took it out to seat more customers.
Tom s Tavern will go down in local history with now legendary downtown hangouts such as Shannon's, Potter's, the Aristocrat - that great greasy corner Greek restaurant that cooked hash browns right in the window, Fred's Steak House, the New York Deli and, although I hesitate to put such a rank pool hall in the same company as Tom's, Walt and Hank's, a bar catty-corner to Tom's that predated Old Chicago. Let's just say it wasn't a place to take your mom when she visited.
