The long-simmering relationship between the San Diego County Water Authority and its Los Angeles-based waterlord, the Metropolitan Water District, could come to a boil Monday.
As San Diego's water authority representatives travel to Los Angeles for a meeting of Met member agencies, they are faced with both bureaucratic and financial hurdles to a proposed water transfer of up to 200,000 acre-feet per year from the Imperial Irrigation District. An acre-foot is the equivalent of 328,000 gallons.
A set of principles related to "wheeling," or a method of transporting water, have been interpreted by the Met staff to discourage the San Diego-Imperial water deal, according to Mark Watton, CWA chairman.
"Your transfer doesn't fit our principles," Watton said, in characterizing the Met position.
