UNLIKE EARLY, straightforward personal information managers (PIMs), today's versions are often top heavy with secondary features. Fortunately, that isn't the case with Lotus Development Corp.'s Lotus Organizer 97. This incremental upgrade to a 32-bit Windows 95 application doesn't hit a home run with any extraordinary new features. But Lotus understands that extending Organizer's core time management is what many users want.
In general, Organizer 97 has improved Calendar, Notepad, and Calls sections. Furthermore, it's easier to navigate through the various parts and connect information from one area to another, such as linking telephone calls that you've scheduled to your daily calendar.
Organizer 97 retains its notebook desktop, with tabbed pages that open to Calendar, ToDo, Address, Calls, Planner, Notepad, and Anniversary sections. Subtle changes involve Windows 95 drag-and-drop capabilities. For example, better support for Telephony API let me drop a phone number from the Address section to the Phone icon, which then dialed the phone number for me. And pressing the right mouse button displayed a menu of shortcuts specific to the Organizer section that I was using.
